36th Annual Calico Christmas Merchant Open House

Amador City’s GOLDPAN Merchant Association will be hosting the 36th annual Calico Christmas the first weekend in December, Saturday, December 6 and Sunday, December 7, 2008. The town is decorated with its traditional fresh evergreen garlands and calico lights. Warm shops with friendly faces offer a great variety of gift ideas and holiday decorations. Merchants will host free refreshments for visitors to enjoy while they shop. Live music throughout the day and special events will add to the festive holiday spirit.
Saturday there will be a variety of events for the entire family. You can have a family picture taken in our winter wonderland scene, located in the center of town. Five dollar souvenir pictures will be available to purchase as well as hot cocoa for two bits. The highlight of the weekend is the annual tree lighting. At 5:30 on Saturday all are welcome to meet at the Imperial Hotel for the Walk of Light. Enjoy a candlelight procession led by traditional caroling through the streets to the town tree. The lighting of the tree will be at 6:00 followed by caroling and a free treat courtesy of the GOLDPAN merchants. Plan to stay and shop late as stores will be open until 8:00pm.

After hunting for a great old treasure, visitors can grab a bite to eat at Buffalo Chips which serves hamburgers, sandwiches, ice cream and homemade pie or sample sandwiches, fresh-baked bread, coffee, tea and pastries at Andrae’s Bakery. Or, bring a picnic lunch and eat along the creek by the Little Amador Garden Railroad.
Maps will be available throughout town to help you find dealer spaces, restaurants, parking and restrooms. Maps may also be requested prior to the event. Amador County Historic Railroad Foundation

The Amador County Historic Railroad Foundation is having its monthly board of directors meeting Thursday, March 20 at the Amador County Administration Center, 810 Court St., in Conference Room D (second floor) at 6 p.m. Meetings are held the third Thursday of the month. Established in 2006, the nonprofit foundation's mission is "to help preserve, protect and reflect the rich railroad heritage of Amador County for the educational and recreational benefit of current and future generations." If you are interested in railroads, railroad history, full-scale and model railroading, or simply want to participate in the development and growth of the railroad museum, the board is looking for you. Membership to the foundation is encouraged and welcomed.

A town hall meeting will be held at the Veterans Hall on Buckhorn Ridge Road on Thursday, Feb. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. The 22 acres have been donated by Volcano Communications, who will retain a couple of highway-facing acres for business use. The meeting will be facilitated by ACRA Director Tracey Towner-Yep. She will be looking for ideas not only for use, but also development funding. Every idea will be considered. Sierra Wildlife Rescue - Wildlife in Your Backyard - El Dorado County

Sierra Wildlife Rescue will begin its 2008 classes for the general public and potential and current rehabbers this month. "Wildlife in Your Backyard" will have information on the natural history of many of El Dorado County's wild animals. It will be held Saturday, Jan. 12 from 10 a.m. to noon. The class will be repeated Wednesday, Feb. 20 from 7 to 9 p.m. The class, "Are You Ready to Rehab?," will be held Saturday, Jan. 26 from 1 to 3 p.m. A further class for current and potential rehabbers on rehabbing each species will be given in February, March and April. The Amador County Genealogy group will meet Wednesday, Jan. 9 and Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 1 p.m. at the General Services Administration building on Airport Road. At the January meeting, the group will review and check surnames. At the February meeting, Sheldon Johnson will talk about how to research old land records. Although Johnson is the county recorder, what he has to say will be for anyone searching old land records anywhere in the United States. Become a CASA volunteer - Amador County

The Amador-Tuolumne Community Action Agency is currently recruiting volunteers for the Court Appointed Special Advocates program. CASA volunteers are specially trained community members who work directly with children moving through our court system as a result of abuse or neglect. CASA volunteers advocate for these children, helping to define their needs and providing attention and support. If you love working with children, have a flexible schedule and are looking for ways to contribute to our community, please join. Speech and Leadership Skills Workshop for the Public - Martell

A Speech and Leadership Skills Workshop will be held Mondays, Jan. 14 and 28; Feb. 4, 11 and 25 and March 3, 10 and 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the General Services Administration building, 12200 B Airport Road, Martell. This is a speech and leadership skills project for youth 10 through 18 years old and adults. It will be accomplished in eight two-hour sessions with curriculum from the Speak It Forward Program. The project covers the following subjects: Chairmanship, Public Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, Speech Organization, Listening, Gestures in Speaking, Voice and Vocabulary and Skill Development. This Program is an informal course in the arts of communication and leadership. Anyone interested in signing up for this training should contact Larry at 223-6484.

Amador County Historical Society - Sutter Creek

The next meeting will be held at the Sutter Creek Community Center on Church Street, starting at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25. At this meeting, the group will present the "Amador Cities" collection of Ed and Margaret Swift. This is a comprehensive collection of photos and other memorabilia from Ed's collection, seldom seen by the public. Refreshments will be provided by the ACHS prior to and after the meeting. The ACHS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the county's historic sites, buildings, as well as preserving the history of Amador County. General meetings are open to the public and there is no admission charge, but donations are always welcome. For more information,
