Regarding Scott Anderson's Dec. 21 commentary, which noted a lack of community involvement by local corporate groups, I'd like readers to know the generosity of one "Big Box" retailer, Kmart. For 15 or so years, Kmart has supported the Christmas to Remember program. Community members donate tens of thousands of dollars to this program yearly. Children from Amador and Calaveras counties are then taken on a clothing shopping spree to Kmart, where they are assisted in their shopping by high school students. Over the years, Kmart has given a 10 to 20 percent discount on the purchases. Over a three day period, more than 300 kids are brought in to shop. Visitors to Kmart during this time will see happy, smiling faces on all those involved. The Kmart associates are extremely supportive and helpful during these busy times! This year was no exception. Hundreds of kids experienced the joy of the season, partly due to the generosity of our local Kmart and its employees. Thank you to all of the Kmart employees responsible for this Christmas gift.
