Burn Ban for Sacramento County Today

The Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District is issuing a Stage 1 Wood Burning Status Tuesday. This means there is no burning unless you are exempt.

News10 Meteorologist Monica Woods says weather conditions are set up today to trap particulate matter like wood smoke in the air. Woods says we have light winds and an inversion which is when warmer air is above the cooler air. This warmer air acts like a blanket and combined with the light winds, inhibits the dispersal of pollutants.

Poor air quality this time of year is due to fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) which is mostly the result of residential wood burning. According to the SMAQMD, this can be a serious health risk including premature death.

The restrictions went in place for the first time this year in Sacramento County and continue through February 29.
