Monk Common Ground Senior Services, Inc. of Amador and Calaveras counties recently received a new van to help with its Meals on Wheels food delivery program. Photo by: Bethany A. Monk Common Ground Senior Services, Inc. of Amador and Calaveras counties has received a new van, and according to the organization's executive director, this new addition will make things a lot easier. The new vehicle will be used for Common Ground's Meals on Wheels program for Amador and Calaveras counties. The Meals on Wheels program delivers meals to people who are 60 years or older and homebound by either health or transportation reasons. The Older Americans Act, administered by Area 12 Agency on Aging, and community and participant donations fund the program. The new vehicle cost $35,000 and was funded by the Amador County Senior Citizens group, a nonprofit organization, and from a grant from the Jackson Rancheria Casino, Hotel and Conference Center, according to Elizabeth Thompson, Common Ground executive director. The vehicle, she added, will help deliver 65 meals. Before the new vehicle arrived, there was only one van used to deliver both frozen and hot meals to the 170 Meals on Wheels clients. Meals on Wheels drivers deliver meals between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, according to a Common Ground pamphlet. It's more than just a meal program, Thompson said. "It's for socialization as well. Some of our clients don't see people often," she added, noting that those who deliver the meals also check on the clients to make sure they're OK. Thompson said that Common Ground is always on the lookout for good volunteers who can help pack meals and help with other tasks. Another program offered by Common Ground is the Congregate Dining program in both Amador and Calaveras counties. At select locations in both counties, any person 60 or older can enjoy a free meal. Those who qualify may sign up for the program right at the location. Suggested donation is $4 per meal. Congregate meal sites in Amador County, which serve lunch beginning at 11:45 a.m. on select days include: - Amador Senior Center, 229 New York Ranch Road, Jackson; Congregate meals are served Monday through Friday. Call 223-0452. - Plymouth Town Hall, 9426 Main St, Plymouth; Congregate meals are served on Wednesday. Call 245-6941 Those 60 an over can soon enjoy a similar program at Sierra House Restaurant in Pine Grove, Thompson said. The only difference is that visitors can come during the restaurant's open hours for breakfast or lunch. The suggested donation is also $4. Calaveras locations include: - Chapel in the Pines, 2286 Cedar Lane, Arnold; meals are served on Tuesdays. Call 795-1064. - Burson Old Fire Station, 3624 N. Burson Road in Burson. Meals are served on Wednesdays. Call 772-2200. Restaurants in Calaveras County that participate in the program include Copper Kitchen in Copperopolis, Rod's Grill in Angels Camp, Campbell's Kitchen in Valley Springs and Cozy Cabin in West Point. Visitors 60 and over can enjoy a breakfast or lunch meal at these restaurants during the days and times these meals are offered. Suggested donation is also $4. For more information on these or any other Common Ground Senior Services, Inc. programs, call 223-3015. Bethany A. Monk COMMENTS ON THIS ARTICLE No comments have been posted in the last 15 days!
