Garages, basements and traditional dump sites are no places for junked electronic devices that have become victims of technological advancements.

Tomorrow at the Amador County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, the Amador County Fair & Event Center and Electronic Recyclers are offering an electronic waste recycling day to county residents.

From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., people with unwanted computer monitors, plasma screens, stereo systems, microwaves and other electronic devices can drop them off for free, clear up some room around the house and help protect the environment.

It is illegal to simply throw an unwanted television or computer into the trash in the state of California. Doing so allows environmentally hazardous and toxic chemicals found in such devices to enter landfills unchecked. By law, devices like these must be recycled properly and in ways that are ecologically sound.

Amador fair officials and Electronic Recyclers, the largest electronic waste recycler in the state, are teaming up to provide a service that allows individuals to get rid of unwanted electronic devices in an environmentally safe manner.

All anyone needs to do is bring their old or damaged televisions, plasma screens, computer monitors, laptops, or LCD screens to the fairgrounds at 18621 Sherwood St. in Plymouth, and organizers will properly dispose of what's dropped off. There is no limit to how much people can drop off and there is no charge. However, anything with freon, such as refrigerators and freezers, will not be accepted. No light bulbs, batteries or large appliances will be accepted either.

Visitors can enter the parking lot off Empire Street.
