ACHS antique sale


The Amador County Historical Society, raising funds for its museum and other projects, will hold its last antique and collectible sale at the National Hotel in Jackson on Saturday, June 20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. While the sale is open to members only, many people joined the society to take advantage of the bargains on items in the former antique shops along Vogan Alley. A single membership is $15; family membership is $20. After this sale, the society is considering selling the remaining items in one lot to interested antique and collectible dealers at lower prices. Diabetes Education-Support Group

The Diabetes Education-Support Group will meet Thursday, June 25 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Sutter Amador Hospital's Outpatient Building in the Meadow Room in Jackson. The guest speaker will be Vicki Tucker from New York Fitness. The topic will be "Refreshing Your Exercise Regime." All are welcome. For more information, call 223-7448.



Estate sale benefiting cancer research

An estate sale will be held Saturday, July 4 at the St. George Hotel in Volcano. Starting at 7 a.m., the tag sale will feature antiques donated by the community to the Amador cancer research effort established with the University of California, Davis, Medical Center. There will also be furniture and pottery. Other items will be offered in a storefront adjacent to the St. George. Proceeds will go toward cancer research.



Summer Reading Program

The Summer Reading Program presents "Ride, Rumble and Read" Tuesday, June 23 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the main library in Jackson. Meet local Mother Lode Hog Chapter members. See different motorcycles, listen to the rumble of their engines and enjoy stories read by chapter participants. On Friday, June 26 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, come in and sign-up for your special time reading to Charlie Brown, a registered Reading Education Assistance Dog. The children will read appropriate age and reading level literature to Charlie. This is a one-on-one reading experience so sign-up is required. For more information, call the library at 223-6400. All programs are free of charge.



Mother Lode Newcomers

The Mother Lode Newcomers will hold a Picnic in the Park on Friday, July 10 at Minnie Provis Park in Sutter Creek. Come to the park for a newcomers potluck dinner and enjoy the sounds of Groovesmyth. Potluck dinner is from 5 to 6 p.m. Music is from 6 p.m. to dusk. Hot dogs, buns and condiments will be supplied by newcomers. Those attending should bring their own drinks and chairs. Sierra Madre Garden Club

The Sierra Madre Garden Club's monthly meeting is on Tuesday, June 23 at 1:30 p.m. at the Amador Senior Center in Jackson, 229 New York Ranch Road. This month's program will be on drought tolerant plants. The speaker is Ada Vetter, of Home Herb Garden. The meeting is open to the public. For more information, call Jane at 295-8619.



Backcountry Horsemen of California

Backcountry Horsemen of California is a group of dedicated men and women working to preserve the historic use of trails with recreational pack and saddle stock. They perform public service activities for numerous land management agencies and are continually working to educate members of the public on how to be "gentle users." The Mother Lode Unit (covers Amador County) will meet Monday, June 22 at Denny's in Auburn, 1800 Auburn Ravine Road. National Alliance on Mental Illness

The Amador County chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness is holding an affiliate meeting and support group Tuesday, June 23 in the conference room at Sutter Amador Hospital in Jackson. From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., they will discuss community advocacy relating to depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, etc. From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., they will conduct a support group for family members and caregivers of those with mental illnesses. Meetings occur the fourth Tuesday of each month, are confidential and open to the public. NAMI is a nationwide organization dedicated to improving the lives of persons living with serious mental illness and their families. For information, call Helen Loffland at 295-3573.



Advance Health Care Directive Workshop

A free workshop on completing an Advance Health Care Directive will be held Tuesday, June 23 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Amador Senior Center, 229 New York Ranch Road, Jackson. The workshop will include both parts of an accepted California Health Care Directive: Durable Power of Attorney for Health (naming a surrogate decision maker), and the Living Will (health care instructions for the surrogate.) Bonnie Evans will be facilitating the workshop. She received her Advance Directive certification through Coda Alliance, a nonprofit organization created to address end-of-life issues. JHS class of 1969 reunion

Jackson High School class of 1969 is planning a reunion. All graduates, teachers and staff from JHS are invited. The party will be Sept. 12 at the Jackson Rancheria Hotel from 5 p.m. to midnight. The cost for dinner, music of the 1960s and 70s is $50 per person, with a $20 slot play rebate. Reservations must be received by Aug. 1. Also, in a quest to organize a class reunion, organizers have discovered a great deal of JHS memorabilia missing. Mother Lode Quilters' Guild

Mother Lode Quilters' Guild's June meeting will be Monday, June 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sutter Creek United Methodist Church in Sutter Creek. Come and enjoy meeting with other quilters, get new quilting tips, and show and tell. There will also be snacks available. This month the guest speaker will be Judy Ohrt, a quilt judge who will give tips for making your fair entries become blue ribbon winners. Guests are always welcome. Cancer support group

The cancer support group meets the fourth Wednesday of every month from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Amador STARS office, 12120 Industry Blvd., Suite 32 (two doors east of the new Safeway) in Martell. The group offers support and shares information on various topics, including nutrition, symptom management and alternative therapies. Cancer survivors, patients, caregivers, family members and friends are encouraged to attend. Refreshments are provided. Amador County Behavioral Health Department

The Amador County Behavioral Health Department will hold a community meeting on Tuesday, June 30 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Health and Human Services Building, 10877 Conductor Blvd. in Sutter Creek. This is the first community-wide meeting for this phase of the Mental Health Service Act planning process. During the next few months, they will be developing strategies for: Prevention and early intervention programs; workforce development activities; new information technology systems; behavioral health facilities; supportive housing; and unique and innovative behavioral health practices. The Resource Connection

The Resource Connection (formerly HRC Child Care Resources), is sponsoring a child care licensing orientation for people who are interested in establishing and operating a family child care business in their home.
