Gold Rush blacks focus of event

STOCKTON - Blacks who worked during the California Gold Rush will be the subject of a Black History Month program planned for Feb. 9 at the Cesar Chavez Central Library in downtown Stockton.

"Mining for Freedom: Black History Meets the California Gold Rush" will be the topic of Sonora historian and author Sylvia Roberts at the 2 p.m. program in the library's Stewart-Hazelton Room. She will address the story of thousands of skilled blacks of the Gold Rush whose efforts have been hidden in obscure records.

Roberts' soon-to-be released book, "Mining for Freedom: Black History Meets the California Gold Rush," chronicles many unique pioneer stories from the Mother Lode.
