It may surprise you to learn that Pioneer station,
touting Kelly tires in this photo, is not as old as it appears. Its
log construction is deceiving. Sometime in the 1920s it arose beside
the still unpaved Alpine highway and its owners have watched the muddy
and dusty route become an all-year highway. It's not certain whether
the Barnhart family built the station or were just one of the several
owners or lessees of the store, and campground at the 3,000 feet elevation.
But they owned it when this photo was taken. It sits at or near the
junction of the old Defender grade or road which was the only route
down to the West Point bridge until the construction in modern times
of the Red Corral Road. Hence, on one of its corners there was usually
some type of store and bar combination to serve the miners, lumbermen
and ranchers in that area.
