Photographer
George Stewart, creating images in Amador and later in Sacramento,
returned sometime in the
1890s to take this
arresting photograph of the Martel Station, probably as Louis Napoleon,
Jr. and family opened a new station at the southwesterly corner of
today's junction of Highway 49 and the Ione Cutoff Road. While others
operated the station, Martel ran freight teams and kept six blacksmiths
busy at forge and anvil. This Martel came from Eastern Canada circa
1860, joining his father and uncle(s) in Jackson. In the photo we see:
front, left, Nellie Wilds, Martel, his wife Delia holding baby Delia.
Others in photo are Julius Krimmel (Kremmel) a neighbor, Johnny Canonica,
and children Annie, Frankie, and Jack on the horse. The Martels spelled
their name with one "l" but usage added a second, at least
to the community. |
