It's 1880 and Ham's Station on the
Amador-Nevada toll wagon road is one of the last stops before Silver
Lake. Or if you're
coming from Nevada, one of several stops before Pine Grove or Volcano.
Ham's also served as a toll station on the road which was superintended
for years by John Horsley. Note the sheep in the sketch from the 1881
Thompson & West History of Amador County. In those days, at Silver
Lake and elsewhere, sheep seemed as plentiful as cattle in the lush,
high Sierra meadows.
