Need we have an apostrophe in "Cooks Station" to
show ownership? Not anymore, a century ago a Mr. Cook did own the station
at the 5,000 foot level on the old Amador-Nevada Wagon Road. How old
are those cars idling or parked there? Circa 1930? Or before? Cooks
arose in the 1850s when Charley Stidham (Stedham) started the roadside
inn to exploit the traffic coming down the Volcano cutoff of the Carson
Emigrant Trail. When the cutoff became a trans-Sierra toll wagon road
in 1863, inns and way stations popped up like mushrooms along the route.
There were as many as 15 in the 1860s. In time, most disappeared, leaving
only Cook's at 5,000 feet, Ham's at 6,000, and Kirkwood Inn at 7800
feet.
