State Announces $15M In Job Training Grants

SACRAMENTO (AP) ― Just as California's unemployment rate jumped to the highest rate in 14 years, the state is announcing $15 million in job training grants to help regions of the state hardest hit by the economic downturn.

Governor Schwarzenegger's office announced the grants a day after releasing $18.4 miilion in job grants targeted for veterans.

"Not only will these grants provide job training and placement to those hardest hit by the economic downturn, but they will help stimulate our economy when we need it the most," said Governor Schwarzenegger in a press release today. "These job grants are an important part of our wide-ranging efforts to get our state's economy back on track – and get Californians back to work."

Part of the money will go to specific areas impacted by major layoffs or busines closures like Alameda County which was heavily impacted by the layoffs from Mervyns and E-Loan.

The other $8 million will go to 15 Workforce Investment Areas (WIA)  in regions of the state that have the highest increase in unemployment.

Sacramento County will get $546,356.  The Mother Lode WIA which served Amador, Calaveras, Mariposa and Tuolumne counties will get $75,669.  And the Golden Sierra WIA which serves Alpine, El Dorado and Placer counties will recieve $135.070.  The money is to be used to provide education, training and job placement assistance.
