The new bridge over Sutter Creek on the Highway 49 bypass will not be named for Army Private First Class Jay-D Ornsby-Adkins, the 21-year-old Ione resident who was killed in Iraq on April 28.

Instead, the Amador County Board of Supervisors agreed Tuesday that the designation will go to the bridge over Amador Creek on the new bypass road.

Richard Forster, the new chairman of the board of supervisors, who represents District 2, which includes Ione, said the Allen family "has some issues" about naming the Sutter Creek bridge for Ornsby-Adkins, because one of their family members was killed during World War II and is buried about 1,000 feet from the bridge.

The Allen Ranch is bisected by the highway bypass, and the Allen family also donated the site for the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, Forster said.

"The board wants to be sensitive to the sacrifice they made," he said, adding that Ornsby-Adkins' mother has already indicated she has no issue with the change.

"We had good intentions when we passed this (the resolution in November to name the bridge for Ornsby-Adkins)," said District 5 Supervisor Brian Oneto. "I think this would be a win for everybody. We are not trying to dishonor anybody."

The board considered naming the Sutter Creek bridge "Amador County Veterans Memorial Bridge," but then discovered that the bridge over Rancheria Creek, near Drytown, had already been given that designation in May 1997, though at present no sign is posted near the bridge to indicate that fact.

On a motion by District 3 Supervisor Ted Novelli, the board agreed to rescind its earlier motion and name the Amador Creek bridge for Ornsby-Adkins.

The board's request will go to State Sen. Dave Cox, who will be asked to carry a resolution to the state legislature.

In November, Forster said it would likely be early this year before a state resolution could be adopted, and that the young man's mother, Robyn Ornsby, has requested that any bridge-naming ceremony be held on the anniversary of her son's death.
