A Stockton city official faces up to four months in jail for vehicular manslaughter that resulted in the death of a 74-year-old woman in a 2007 accident, which took place in Amador County.
On March 26, Dino Leonardi, the Stockton Parks and Recreation community and cultural services superintendent, pleaded guilty to a charge of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, said Amador County District Attorney Todd Riebe.
On May 8, 2007, Leonardi "unlawfully and without malice" killed Ruby Alston of Stockton while driving in Amador County, according to court documents.
The collision occurred on Highway 88 in the area of Sunset West, said John Hardey, a California Highway Patrol officer in Amador County. The indications were that Leonardi was speeding, he said, adding that collisions in that particular area are not typical.
The driver of the vehicle that crashed, Jennet Stebbins, is running for the 5th Senate District seat, while the other passenger, Mark Stebbins, is a former Stockton councilman who recently declared candidacy for the District 6 council seat, the Stockton Record reported. He suffered major injuries in the crash.
Leonardi agreed to serve 120 days in jail, three years of formal probation, and court-determined restitution, Riebe said. Restitution may include medication, loss of vehicle, car insurance, lost wages and the amount of money the family spent on ambulance bills.
His sentencing hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. May 1 at the Amador Superior Court in Jackson.
Leonardi could not be reached for comment before deadline.
