Valley air officials pleading for more money (12:31 p.m.)

San Joaquin Valley officials are pleading today with state officials to give them more money to reduce pollution from the movement of freight in California.

Valley officials want $370 million of the $1 billion available from voter-approved Proposition 1B. But the state Air Resources Board has recommended about $250 million goes to the Valley.

The state came up with that number based in part on population, which favors Los Angeles. Also, many trucks in the Valley are older and dirtier than others areas.

State officials, however, have said that the Valley is likely to benefit from money spent in other regions of the state, since many trucks travel through the Central Valley en route to other locations.

The board is hearing testimony on the subject this afternoon at its meeting in Sacramento.
