Stanislaus supervisor denies inappropriate relationship (12:40 p.m.)

MODESTO (AP) -- A Stanislaus County supervisor denies that he had an inappropriate relationship with a woman accused of using his personal information to obtain credit cards and ringing up thousands of dollars in charges.

Supervisor Jim DeMartini testified in Stanislaus County court on Tuesday at a preliminary hearing in the case of 22-year-old Serena Essapour of Turlock.

The judge is trying to determine if Essapour should stand trial on felony charges of false impersonation, grand theft and misuse of personal identifying information.

The 54-year-old supervisor says he and Essapour met three years ago and went to lunch regularly and that he co-signed a car loan because she had wrecked her vehicle.

But DeMartini denied that he had had a sexual relationship with Essapour.
