Elderly Lodi man run down in crosswalk (1:03 p.m.)

LODI – A 75-year-old Lodi man is in critical condition after being struck by a car on Lodi Avenue near Washington Street this morning, Police said

Francisco Cervantes Valdez was walking in a crosswalk attempting to cross Lodi Avenue at about 7 a.m., Capt. Gary Benincasa said.

Two cars traveling eastbound on Lodi Avenue approached Valdez. One was able to swerve out of the way, the other struck Valdez, Benincasa said.

Lodi Avenue was closed for two hours, and police continue to investigate the case.

“It appears the pedestrian had right-of-way,” Benincasa said. “He was in the crosswalk.”

Valdez was taken by helicopter to the University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento where he is listed in critical condition, a spokeswoman said.
