Jackson Valley Quarry will continue functioning beyond its operational limitations, as stated in its current use permit, after the county's board of supervisors approved the company's request Tuesday to remain working on an emergency erosion project.

In response to the need for emergency levee repairs, George Reed, Inc./Jackson Valley Quarry previously requested increased hours and days of production in both 2006 and 2007. The board's approval Tuesday will let the company produce its regular 500,000 tons of rock, with an additional 400,000 tons during the year. This will be the final extension, the board stipulated in its motion.

The original approval to increase production and volume in 2006, resulted from Gov. Arnold Schwazenegger's March 6 executive order. Schwarzenegger declared seven California counties in a state of emergency for severe rainstorms and floods, and Amador County was one of these counties.

Jackson Valley Quarry originally presented its request for a third extension to supervisors during the board's Aug. 12 meeting. After much discussion, though, including input from the public, supervisors decided they needed more information from the company, including seismic graphs, before revisiting the issue.
