Supervisors in February contracted with Coast2CoastRx. In exchange for lining up extra customer volume for its member pharmacists, Coast2Coast shares in each pharmacist's dispensing fee for each prescription filled. Since February, Amador County has lined up a stable of participating pharmacies, and in exchange is collecting a 50-cent kickback per prescription. The revenue is generated by the extra volume that goes to the participating pharmacies. County residents have received discount cards good at the participating pharmacists, which number about half a dozen, according to District 1 Supervisor John Plasse. "The store keeps one part of the dispensing fee, and another part goes to a benefits manager, who splits it with us, and we split it with you (Amador County)," said Marty Dettelbach, chief marketing officer of Coast2CoastRx. Discounts are expected to average around 38 percent. The program was launched May 26 after supervisors voted to donate proceedings to the Common Ground nonprofit, best known in Amador for its Meals on Wheels program, Plasse said. "There will be about a 90-day lag time for revenues to start getting to Common Ground," Plasse said. Numerous membership cards have been distributed by hand to residents. Plasse said a "print-your-own" option to obtain a card is available on the county's Web site. The Common Ground nonprofit serves nearly 50,000 meals a year to residents, said Candice Aubert, administrative assistant. "We only get reimbursed a certain amount," Aubert said. "The suggested donation is $3.50, but the cost is more than $3.50 per meal." The prescription discounts are expected to help seniors especially in respect of medicines particularly useful to seniors but not covered by most insurance programs, such as prescriptions for shingles, for erectile dysfunction and for quitting smoking after decades of addiction, Plasse said. The Amador County Prescription Discount Card Program does not replace insurance, but provides discounts for drugs not covered by insurance. A free discount card may be picked up at the Human Resources Department or board of supervisors office located at 810 Court St. in Jackson, as well as the Amador Senior Center, located at 229 New York Ranch Road in Jackson. Cards are also available at the Social Services Agency and Wellness Center located at Conductor Boulevard in Sutter Creek, as well as most participating pharmacies. People can also download and print their own card from the link on the county Web site, www.co.amador.ca.us, and look for other card distribution locations.
