What Can You Do?

In the face of complex laws, lengthy legal processes, and challenging local politics, people often wonder what they can do to help protect our local quality of life and environment. There are many things you can do for your organization and your community. For instance, you can

Distribute copies of this newsletter to local businesses.

Volunteer to help with Foothill Conservancy activities, including our periodic river cleanups, or better yet - offer to help organize those activities. We'd like to put together a tenth anniversary event soon.

Tell your friends you belong to the Foothill Conservancy, and why, and persuade them to join, too. We can be effective as a small group, but there is strength in numbers. And if you're not yet a member, join us!

Let the Amador County supervisors know that you want them to do a better job protecting ourenvironment and quality of life. If they don't hear from you, they assume - not unreasonably - that you approve of their actions. Remind them that they represent all taxpayers, not just development interests.

Help organize FC public meetings with speakers on land use, community, and environmental topics.

Attend meetings of the county boards of supervisors and planning commissions to voice your opinions on local issues.

Volunteer to organize FC fundraising efforts, such as the annual lasagne bakeoff.

Write letters to the editor expressing your concerns.

Invite Foothill Conservancy to speak to your organization or group.

Participate in our Adopt-A-Highway cleanups - call Leslie Martin at 223-1850.

Help find candidates willing to run for local office. Or better still, if you want to make a difference, think about running yourself. Nevada County has a 4-1 pro-environmental majority on its board of supervisors, so we know that change can happen!
