Those of us concerned about growth and development in western Calaveras County were pleased to learn that the Ponte Ranch subdivision, a 1,400-unit development proposal near Valley Springs, will not be built. The developer and the landowner recently failed to extend their option agreement. As a result, ownership of the land reverts solely back to Ponte family and the development proposal folds.
Ponte Ranch posed both environmental and community problems. Among other things, it would have eliminated a stand of mature blue oaks and created tremendous traffic circulation problems for Valley Springs.
Now is the opportunity for the community to reach out to the Ponte family and work toward preserving the land in a conservation easement or similar arrangement.
We applaud the efforts of MyValleySprings.com, the Calaveras Planning Coalition and individuals in the community who educated the public and county officials about the problems associated with this project. Without their efforts, this project—with all of its adverse effects—would have moved forward long ago.
