Plan for a dam on the Mokelumne's Middle Bar reach is abandoned

San Joaquin County water interests have abandoned - hopefully for good - the long-debated plan to build a 190-foot dam on the Mokelumne River's Middle Bar reach to provide more drinking and irrigation water for that county.

The dam would have flooded the entire Middle Bar reach and most of the Electra Run that's popular with whitewater boaters and local families, and would have submerged the Highway 49 bridge.

This is great news for the Conservancy, Friends of the River, the American Whitewater Affiliation and others who have been working to ensure that the Middle Bar and Electra reaches stay river, not reservoir.

Our opposition focused on the adverse effects the dam would have on the region's economy, wildlife, fish, recreation, plants and other resources.

The dam and reservoir project was seen as a way to capture Mokelumne floodwaters to meet the needs of the San Joaquin County's rising population without overburdening its groundwater supplies.

Instead of the dam, San Joaquin County is now considering constructing an off-river reservoir on Duck Creek within the county lines, according to county water resources coordinator Mel Lytle.
