Kirkwood Plans Expansion
If you are among the many local residents who downhill ski at Kirkwood Mountain Resort or hike and cross-country ski in the surrounding Mokelumne Wilderness and national forest, you should know about Kirkwood's current expansion plans. Details were recently announced by the US Forest Service.

Kirkwood's skiing capacity is currently 6,200 skiers. Under its new Mountain Master Development Plan, the capacity would increase to 10,800 skiers at one time. The expansion proposal includes upgrading and realigning three chair lifts, installing two new chairlifts and four new surface lifts, and constructing a lodge near the summit of Caples Crest. Three-quarters of the skier activity would take place on national forest lands.

In a request for comments for the environmental review of the expansion, the Forest Service noted a list of issues raised thus far. They include:

  • Potential effects to the Emigrant Trail.
  • Potential effect to the nearby Mokelumne Wilderness.
  • Adequacy of resort infrastructure and the environmental effects of upgrading utilities.
  • Potential effects to late seral stage (old growth) vegetation.
  • Potential effects to wildlife and plants, including threatened, endangered, and sensitive species.
  • Potential watershed effects, including cumulative effects and potential effects to streams and streamside areas.

    A plan to expand ski operations below Martin Point has evidently been put on hold for now. That area, just below the new Thunder Mountain trail off Highway 88, includes very old red fir and juniper trees that would have been cut to build the new ski run.
