Continuing its efforts to help inform the public about which interests are funding political campaigns, the Fair Political Practices Commission today started providing information on its website detailing “independent expenditure” spending in 10 key legislative races in the November 4, 2008, statewide election. These reports will be updated on a daily basis through Election Day.

“This is a continuation of the Commission’s efforts to provide as much disclosure as possible to the voting public as to which groups and committees are spending money to support or oppose candidates,” commented Ross Johnson, Chairman of the FPPC.

In the June primary election, the FPPC posted on its website “independent expenditure” spending in 26 open legislative races, as well as who contributed to those “independent expenditure” groups.
“’Independent expenditure’ spending has been of key interest to the Commission,” Johnson continued. “In a report released earlier this year, the FPPC noted that nearly $100 million has been spent on ‘independent expenditures’ since contribution limits took effect on January 1, 2001. It seems likely that millions more will be spent prior to the November general election.”

The information available at www.fppc.ca.gov tracks independent expenditure spending for the upcoming November election in the following 10 legislative races:
