The San Joaquin Valley does not meet federal health-based air quality standards for ozone, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Friday The agency has since issued a "finding of failure to submit" to the state of California for not meeting a federal Clean Air Act requirement for the area. "While the valley's air pollution control district already has in place a broad set of rules, the Clean Air Act requires areas to review and update their rules to assure they continue to provide the most stringent level of control that is reasonably available," the EPA said in a news release. "The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District was required to undertake this review as a result of its 2004 voluntary reclassification to 'extreme' for the 1-hour ozone standard." The district said it has started working on the revised plan and expects it to be submitted to the EPA by this summer. Stockton, Fresno, Turlock, Merced, Modesto and Bakersfield are all cities within the San Joaquin Valley. Copyright 2009 by KCRA.com. All rights reserved.
