While I appreciate the effort to find a solution to the ailing state budget, diverting First 5 funds is not the answer (Aug. 19, "Cox calls for First 5 cuts").

As the director of a local preschool, I know firsthand the vital role First 5 Amador plays in providing valuable programs and services in the community, including those most affected by recent budget cuts. As a preschool teacher, I was invited to participate in many of the work groups conducted by First 5 when they were developing their initial plans. By involving the community, they have implemented programs that are specific to the needs of our county. Thanks to First 5 Amador, children and their caregivers have access to resources such as health programs, literacy, and nutrition and fitness to help prepare their children for school and life.

I work closely with parents and children daily and know the challenges in making ends meet. Providing important information and resources to families will save money and hardships down the road. Thanks to the First 5 investments in improving the lives of local families, the young children of Amador County are happier, healthier and more prepared for school.
