A bridge too far?

I have just finished reading the article "Bridge naming up in the air" in the Wednesday, Jan. 9 paper.

I am outraged and in complete disbelief of what I have just read! Let me start by saying I am in no way related to the Ornsby family and therefore am able to view this debate from a fair view point.

While I agree that the Allen family has a valid argument in that we all as Americans and patriots should honor not only the fallen, but any man or woman who has or is now serving this great nation, I am astounded that we as a community could be so cruel as to give this honor to a fallen soldier's mother only to take it back.

I cannot imagine, being a mother myself, the pain and suffering that Ms. Ornsby must have and still endures losing her only child. As we live in a small community I have had the honor of meeting and speaking with Ms. Ornsby a few times. On at least one occasion, she has mentioned her overwhelming gratitude for the support of her community and has specifically mentioned how proud she was in regard to the resolution being given in honor of her son. And now we as a community can just dismiss this for political reasons?

I am amazed that our community could be so callous. As I understand it, Ms. Ornsby has invited her family from Australia to be present at the naming of the bridge.

While I grieve as most of us do for any fallen soldier, Jay -D Ornsby-Adkins is a fallen soldier of this war at this present time. This bridge was completed in the same year PFC Ornsby-Adkins was taken by the war in Iraq.
