The request, part of a Stage 2 water alert, is in response to recent water supply cutbacks by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the San Juan Family of Water Agencies, according to a news release by the water districts. There are five stages of water conservation, with a Stage 5 being a water emergency. Customers are asked to reduce their water use by 5 percent to 10 percent, which will help water agencies plan for adequate water supply availability if dry conditions persist, the release states. The Sierra snow melt is below normal this year and run-off into Folsom Lake, from which agencies receive water, is at minimum levels because of dry spring conditions. Water agencies will make up for shortfalls by supplementing the water supply with groundwater, the release states. The water districts are offering free programs for their customers, including landscape irrigation review, water efficiency rebates and irrigation analysis. Other tips to conserve water include: • Water early, not often. • Check irrigation systems for leaks, clogs or misdirected sprinklers. • Use weather-based irrigation controllers to help increase outdoor water efficiency. • Fix leaking toilets and dripping faucets. • Use low-flow showerheads. • Run full loads of laundry and dishes.
