It was a beautiful trip rich in wildlife, history, scenic beauty and -- due to high river levels -- heart-pounding excitement. If you haven't been down to the river and don't know what we're talking about, we encourage you to go. The Mokelumne River is an amazing resource right in our backyard, and it costs nothing to go and enjoy it. The public can raft a 6-mile section of the river from near the Electra Powerhouse down to the Middle Bar Bridge on Pardee Reservoir. You can also picnic and fish on one of the sandy beaches, enjoying the river and all of its surroundings. We cannot take the availability of the river for granted. Recently, East Bay MUD has proposed a project to build a new, larger Pardee Dam. The new dam would flood much of this wonderful river of ours. Although the City of Jackson, Ione, Plymouth, Sutter Creek, Amador Water Agency, Amador County and hundreds of Amador and Calaveras County residents have shown EBMUD that they are adamantly opposed to the project, the river may still be flooded against our will. There are about 40 miles of Mokelumne River from Salt Springs Reservoir down to Pardee Reservoir. Of that portion of river, only 6 miles (Electra to Pardee) are not currently flooded with a reservoir or bypassed with a pipe or flume for electrical generation. When the river is bypassed, the flow is greatly decreased and the river loses much of its recreational use. There is a way to protect our last full flowing section of the Mokelumne River from being submerged under a lake or being piped. The Mokelumne River can be federally designated "Wild and Scenic" to prevent it from falling victim to "progress". You can help increase the chances of successfully achieving this designation by signing on to support "Wild and Scenic" at www.foothillconservancy.org or call 295-4900. The growing list of supporters will be used to show our local government officials and members of Congress that our community will not stand for losing our last section of river. Let's make sure there's a river for future generations to enjoy. Please support designating the Mokelumne River "Wild and Scenic". We do.
