Future of Mokelumne River

Thursday, November 05, 2009

- Chris Wright, Executive Director Foothill Conservancy

Keller D'Agostini
East Bay MUD's vote to keep the Pardee Reservoir expansion in its water plan holds two important lessons for Amador and Calaveras County residents.    One is that despite its promises of future collaboration with local interests, EBMUD doesn't much care what local people or governments think. The other is that without permanent protection, the Mokelumne River's future will always be up to three or four water agency directors voting in a board room many miles from here - something we cannot now and never will be able to control.   There is only one solution to ensure we have a river in our future: National Wild and Scenic River designation. National Wild and Scenic Rivers are the river equivalent of the national parks: special places set aside forever for everyone to use and enjoy.   With National Wild and Scenic River designation, we'll be able to use and enjoy the Mokelumne River forever, period. Without it, we'll be forced to fight big, powerful interests who want our river for generations to come.   It really is that simple.   To support National Wild and Scenic River designation for the Mokelumne River, go to www.foothillconservancy.org and sign on, or call 295-4900.
