Fresno Bans Daytime Watering Because Of Drought
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ―
Fresno officials believe they've found a way to force residents to use less water: ban all daytime outdoor irrigation and mandate only "quick rinses" for cars.
The Fresno City Council said Thursday the new restrictions are mandatory and immediate. First-time violators will be warned; others can be fined. The goal is to cut usage by 20 percent.
Until Thursday residents could water on designated days and only before 11 a.m.
The city learned recently it would get 85 percent of its federal water allotment this summer.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a drought Feb. 27 and asked cities to enact tighter water conservation measures.
