This is a wake-up call to the residents of District 1. We need to have a knowledgeable representative on the Amador Water Agency board to thoroughly analyze, determine justification and protect citizens from what seem to be continuing water rate increases. That is why I am supporting Bill Condrashoff in the Nov. 4 election.
On July 1, 2007, the Amador Water Agency increased its water rates to the city of Jackson by 22 percent. AWA also approved additional 12 percent increases to the city for July 1, 2008 and July 1, 2009. The city then advised its water users of these increases to become effective beginning Aug. 1, 2008.
The ratepayers did not favorably receive these increases and submitted enough protests that the council decided to create a committee to study not only the proposed water rate increases, but sewer rate increases as well. Condrashoff was appointed to that committee and quickly became a leader in researching the reasons for the increases. After many meetings, the committee concluded that the key factor leading to the AWA's water rate increases was the division of costs between existing customers and future development for three major capital projects.
The city has requested an agenda item on a future AWA board meeting or a special workshop to clarify some of the outstanding issues. So far, the AWA has not agreed to meet.
This Nov. 4, one of the ballot items will be the selection of District 1's representation on the AWA board. I strongly urge you to vote for Bill Condrashoff for this position. I cannot think of a better person to represent us on these important issues.
