The underwritten rule

I was surprised to read in Mr. Hosseini's May 16 Ledger commentary that the paper's owner is underwriting the campaign of a candidate for county supervisor and helping to pay for his ads. I do not know if this practice is consistent with established precedent and ethics in the newspaper business, but I believe it is bound to raise questions about possible bias in news coverage, even when a reporter may attempt to appear unbiased. For example, the sole photo which accompanied the May 16 article on the candidates forum focused attention on Mr. Pincus. Was this due to to chance or to a deliberate effort to enhance the visibility and name recognition of the candidate Main Street Media Group is backing?
