Also at the Sutter Creek Planning Commission meeting,
the commission approved a motion verifying that they had reviewed the grading
plan for the Powder House
Estates Subdivision, which will be comprised of 79 single family homes located
adjacent to Sutter Crest Estates on Shakeridge
Road. Grading will begin in the spring, and
should not be visible from the downtown area.
The only
issue of major concern during the discussion was regarding the stability of the
scenic Emerson Mine head frame ruin. It was mentioned that a heritage oak tree
is starting to undermine the foundation of the ruin, and that part of a rock
wall collapsed into the mine shaft last year. City residents fear that the
grading project will further disrupt the ruin. City Manager Rob Duke said that
he would pursue the matter, but stated that the city was in a “catch 22” with
the issue of the heritage oak. He also stated that the developer had expressed
unwillingness to shore the ruin without first capping the mine shaft concealed
beneath it.
