Water service to many customers in Sutter Creek and Drytown, and all customers in Amador City was shut off from 9 pm Wednesday until 2 am Thursday. The Amador Water Agency worked in four locations in Sutter Creek to replace a critical broken valve and to install a new valve to improve the City's water distribution system. The Agency's construction contractor for the Plymouth Pipeline, Mountain Cascade, took advantage of the overnight water shut-down to install a section of the Plymouth Pipeline at the same time. "We're very pleased. We accomplished everything we needed to do and finished up ahead of schedule," said Construction Superintendent Barry Birge. "We also got a call from a Sutter Creek resident who thanked us for leaving the job site in great shape. It's really nice to get an 'Attaboy' from the neighbors on a big job like this." Mountain Cascade workers finished their underground work about 1 am Thursday morning, and AWA crews completed their repairs at about 4:00 am. Water distribution staff spent several more hours flushing lines and working the air out of the lines, drained empty by customers and the work crews after the water was shut off. "We drained down miles of the water system, all the way from Sutter Creek to Drytown," said Birge. "It takes a long time to get that much pipe flushed and all the air out of the system." Most affected customers had service restored by 7am. Customers in Amador City were reporting some problems due to air in the lines as late as noon on Thursday, but AWA Customer Service Supervisor Sue Tearpak said those issues were being resolved as they came in. Any time there is a loss of water pressure, there is a potential for water contamination. Immediately after water service was restored early Thursday morning, the water was tested to ensure water quality standards are being met. As a precautionary measure during any outage and the following 24 hours, the Agency suggests customers either boil water or use bottled water for drinking and cooking.
