Gold Rush Ranch versus Free Speech

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

- Ian Watts, Sutter Creek

So now the pro-Gold Rush Ranch folks want the anti-Gold Rush Ranch folks to take down their yard signs? Legal protest and dissent are long-honored traditions in a free society, and those yard signs against Gold Rush Ranch are a sign of a healthy democracy and a robust example of free speech. Regarding the signs and their effect on tourism? Trust me, tourists will continue to come to Sutter Creek to enjoy our well-preserved historic gold rush town, not Gold Rush Ranch. As one who has been a tourist in other historic towns, I too have noticed similar local signs and bumper stickers from time to time over the years. Those signs have always given me a good feeling about the community, because signs in opposition to poor planning indicate that the locals appreciate and want to preserve the integrity of their surroundings.
