Amador County Schools Superintendent Dick Glock and board of trustee members found themselves under fire from enraged parents and one of the largest Jewish groups in Northern California for refusing to investigate hate crimes at Amador High School.
But the school board's problems didn't stop there.
The Nov. 18 meeting, held in a small conference room at the Amador County Unified School District administration building, was packed shoulder-to-shoulder. What the crowd witnessed was a fierce, though measured speech from Barry Broad, an attorney who represents the Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region.
"I have personally spoken with the United States Department of Justice about this case," Broad informed Glock and board members. "And let me assure you that this is a very serious situation this board is in now."
Broad's comments were in reference to Glock and board president Mary Walser's decision to not investigate alleged hate crimes at Amador High School, despite indications from numerous staff members at the school - including Principal Alan Van Velzen - that such crimes occurred. Also attending the meeting with Broad was Legislative Advocate Gary Cooper and Sacramento Attorney Eric Gassman.
"You may think you can do whatever you want because you're out here in Amador County," Broad went on, "but I'm afraid you also belong to the wide, wide world - and the rules that apply there also apply to you. I feel like introducing myself by saying, 'hello, I'm visiting this board tonight from the United States of America ... We are talking about clear civil rights violations. The public statements alone that your employees have made, at the very minimum, suggest total incompetence, if not venality."
Citing his years of experience in politics and litigation, Broad looked directly at Glock and Walser and concluded by saying, "I know you think you can hide, and stop talking, and all this will go away. Trust me, I've seen this a million times and what's happening now is going to wash over you. I don't know what your school mascot is, but it ought to be a shovel - because you just keep digging and digging."
He turned to the school board trustees and added, "the best you people can do now is get up first thing in the morning and call the State Board of Education and ask, 'what can we do to get out of this.' High powers will be getting involved. If you don't deal with this, you will be dealt with. To the outside world, there's no excuse for what's gone on at this school. We've got a lot tougher schools in the state that have real problems where we don't see this type of stuff."
Two parents, also former Amador students, expressed their shame at what had transpired at their alma mater. "Today I am a not-so-proud graduate of Amador High School," said Molly Ibietatorremendia. "How can it be that with the growth and diversity that Amador County has and is experiencing, this behavior and tolerance of hate can continue? How is it that the words 'burn Jew, burn' etched on a locker can remain on that locker for 13 months? How is it that a swastika can be carved on his desk and not really taken seriously? These are hate crimes. This is not just some kids playing a joke. These crimes, which continue to happen in multiple formats, are a federal offense. By the way, Justin's great-grandmother is still alive, and still has her concentration camp tattoo."
Amador graduate Diane Bennet, who's currently going to college to be a public school teacher, also expressed dismay. "I was a student here in the 1990s and we had some of the best teachers," Bennet said. "We never would have had to listen to a conversation like this back then...I am ashamed at what's going on."
The student at the center of the controversy, Justin Zysman, also spoke at the meeting. In recounting the day he attempted to tell a coach about the words, "Burn Jew, burn" being put on his locker, Zysman broke down in tears. A room full of supporters encouraged him to keep talking and Zysman ended by saying he "would always be a proud Buffalo."
Glock, Walser and the school board members declined any public comment.
Watching the meeting was Anne Baird, a representative from Assemblywoman Alyson Huber's office. Baird left the room visibly disturbed. In the hallway, she spoke with Broad about what agency had been contacted. Broad reiterated that the U.S. Department of Justice would soon be making inquiries into the Zysman matter. Baird then told the Ledger Dispatch that she would speak with Huber about the Zysman case and that Huber's office would be closely monitoring the situation.

Resignations
As a resdient of Sutter Creek, I urge the school board to resign as a group and get new personnel in there the public will trust to perform the mandatory duties of the position. Is that plain enough???

Just FYI
Experts: Hate Crime Incidents May Be Vastly Underreported
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The nearly 7,800 hate crimes reported in an FBI compilation released yesterday is probably just a small fraction of the actual number, says National Public Radio. A 2005 federal survey of victims estimated 191,000 such crimes, says Brian Levin of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino.
Attacks on gay people are not recognized as hate crimes in some states. In addition, many victims do not want to make their sexual orientation public. "The most frightening thing about these numbers is what goes unrecorded," said Janet Murguia of the National Council of La Raza, who noted that illegal immigrants are wary of involving law enforcement. Heidi Beirich of the Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center expects to see an increase in the targeting of African- Americans because of the uptick in hate group activity before President Obama's election.
Both of my children graduated from Amador High School back in the 1990's. I am not happy to see the turn of events and the hate 'crime' scenario rearing it's ugly head, but to IGNORE it, simply CANNOT BE TOLERATED. Any who have, do not need to serve in public office. Suffices to say, it's the 'difference' which was exhibited during the Holocaust.
NEVER again!
Much of my maternal family was lost to the hate and the Camps during World WarII.
I do hope, something is done. The Guilty need to be punished. I do not care what age they are. The Representatives need to be fired or voted off the board for their ignorance of justice.
Simply stated
Dave C. can't read
Broad is NOT representing the Zysman family. He is a member of the Jewish Federation, who happens to be an attorney. Broad has nothing to do with the litigation against the school district, nor does his group. Anyone there at the meeting knows he was present to inform Glock and Walser that the Jewish Federation had contacted the Department of Justice regarding their actions. It's about time!
Is That Surprising?
I mean, seriously? This coming from a school that, while I was attending 9 years ago, held a regular senior 'slave' auction?
Lawyers
Cha Ching! Broad smells a cash cow here. No wonder he took the case. By the way, didn't Ross Perot get in hot water for addressing a group as "you people". Oh well, Broad is on the plaintiff side, so I guess it doesn't count.
Amador isn't special
these situations are rampant in this country and have been forever it is our circle of life and a very miserable one at that,
it is taught not only in the schools but in many religious institutions, without it how would we convince our young to go to war?
It happens all the time and nothing ever happens expect that the victim disappears, goes elswhere and moves on, unless..
the victim falls under the umbrella of a rich multinational political lobby, subsidized by US taxes which purchased US government officials to do its bidding, while engaged in its own brand of genocide apartheid at home on its own stolen lands.
Jason, Lindsay, you are privilidged that you are no longer in public school. Your young worlds are much broader without it, you have risen above it. Embrace activism for your cause, Jewish Voice For Peace, or Mad AS Hell Doctors, start your own local group. Carpe Diem.
@Lisa
Lisa,
I would hope homophobic threats would be dealt with. This is not a question of which group is the most marginalized, it is about an overall failure by the administration to address hate crimes.
Last year, an openly gay student at Amador was attacked and beaten up by another student because he was gay. Guess which of those students still attends Amador? Yeah, not the victim.
This situation is just one element of a much larger issue.
Good ole boys?
I agree with Mike Bailey that the administrative staff is incompetant. His statement about the good ole boys made me smile ruefully, as none of these so-called "good ole boys" are good ole boys from the County. All brought their experience from the big city and used it to ruin our reputation. For the first time in a long time, I wish we had some of our "good ole boys" back in these positions. Things were good around here when I was a kid growing up and attending local schools.
...Finally people are seeing...
Fianlly the outside is starting to see what goes on in this county...it's absolutely absurd!!! I feel extremely bad for Justin and his Family, NO ONE should EVER have to go through such a horrible thing! It is absolutely devistating!
This county is definately known for such behavior. It only begins with the schools...
I am very glad someone finally stood up and said enough is enough! I hope every one of them get the justice they deserve!
The children are our future...
And to Justin-
Keep your head high, and walk as tall as the trees...You are an awesome kid and have an awesome family to support you!
Nothing new under the sun...
The entire country, state, and this county were founded and built on racism, genocide, and slavery.
- Icky Okie (11/21/2009 8:07:27 PM)
I find it odd that...
I happened to write a response as a Jewish student at Amador High School who DISAGREES with what everyone is saying, and feels that these are NOT hate crimes due to religion but due to other factors, and my comment does not get posted. How weird? Lets be fair, post ALL comments, not just the ones supporting this article. THANKS.
Not Suprised
While attending high school at Amador I saw and expierienced so many things that should have had a stop put to. I am glad that someone is actually going to the lengths to get the school board examined and hopefully these problems with disapate. The school board so easily turns a blind eye to serious matters that happen on a day to day basis. I wonder if they would still turn a blind eye or allow it to continue if it was one of their kids that was expieriencing this?
Comment from an outsider
I'm a frequent visitor to Jackson. I've been following this story, and I don't understand the district's attitude, either. It seems as though district officials are protecting themselves, or perhaps they're protecting the punks who perpetrate these acts.
Why? Do the kids who commit these hate crimes have parents who are prominent in the community? I really hope Amador High's staff don't share the anti-Semetic opinions expressed by these racist losers.
In any case, I can't believe how badly they're handling this situation.
- Sue S. (11/21/2009 4:52:49 PM)
Not Surprising
I moved here from a neighboring County and "the good ole boy's" click is very evident in the school system here. I have been fighting the school here for a year over a much smaller matter and cannot even get a response re: a stolen cell phone and cash from my child's bag.
The administrative staff in the Amador County school District is horrible. I have never seen such incompetence.
- Mike Bailey (11/21/2009 10:49:30 AM)
Resign
I second the call for resignation of each and every party that did not resign in this fiasco. That would be the first step in the right direction.
Amador High School Discriminates in many ways
Let's not forget Lyndsay....
She is on homeschool and hating it right now because she is NOT safe at school. Neither are the OTHER children at Amador with diabetes... According to DICK GLOCK TYPE 1 DIABETES IS NOT AN ILLNESS.....
Hopefully soon the dispatch readers will have more to take in when they read about the lack of accomodations that Amador does not give their Disabled students....
Children don't get accomodations for TYPE 1, they are just "Troubled teens looking for trouble" ask Dick he'll tell yah that...
This has nothing absolutely nothing to do with high school cheerleading, its about the high schools views on racism, disabilites and lack of respect towards the students and families who pay their salaries......
Embarrassment
This is shocking and embarrassing. I'm sadly not surprised that their are hateful people in this county, but I am absolutely shocked by the behavior of the school administration. I graduated from Amador in 1999 and I cannot ever imagine this happening while I was a student. I am appalled that these supposedly educated people, and by that I mean the Principal, Superintendent and members of the school board did not take action. By allowing it to continue and by doing nothing after they knew it was going on is inexcusable. I think when the day comes they should be standing in the court right next to the students who committed the hate crime. By allowing it to stand and by doing nothing to this day makes them just as guilty, if not more guilty because they should have known better. Amador High School, and Amador county deserve far better than what these educators have delivered.
- Chris Walsh (11/20/2009 9:02:37 PM)
glad you moved back too
I've lived here my whole life and I like it. I dont think its a hell hole. There are worse places to live. I do not condon racism, but calling my home a hell hole is rude. maybe some of us think you live in a hell hole. A couple weeks ago a girl was gang raped in richmond, and witnesses let it happen. Amador County, A hell hole? I dont think so. Besides, you'll get pulled over anywhere with no license lights or a tail light out. Pay your fine and get on with your day.
- Ionesince'79 (11/20/2009 7:26:05 PM)
Justice is on its way!!!!
I pretty much think that Mr. Broad summed it up with his opening statement,"You may think you can do whatever you want because you're out here in Amador County,but I'm afraid you also belong to the wide, wide world - and the rules that apply there also apply to you. I feel like introducing myself by saying, 'hello, I'm visiting this board tonight from the United States of America ... We are talking about clear civil rights violations. The public statements alone that your employees have made, at the very minimum, suggest total incompetence, if not venality."
Hello "Good Ol Boys", are you listening? The years of blatant racism are about to end in Amador County. Finally, someone has come into this hell hole of a county to put an end to it! There is no running and hiding from the D.O.J., they will serve justice swiftly and with a heavy hand. For years public figures, law enforcement and the judicial officers of Amador County have let these acts of violence and racism continue because that is the way of life in the "A.C". And imagine that only if the Principal had done his job and handled this matter IMMEDIATELY and with severe punishment to those involved, this would not be at this point. I feel that those students and administrators who were involved should be charged with a hate crime! And thank god that if it does, it will be heard in Federal Court, and not in the racists and biased Amador County Court.
So to you Mr. Broad, I thank you for everything that you have done and continue to do. Oh and make sure that your license plate light is working and you do not have a headlight out when traveling in the "A.C."!
- Glad I moved back to the Bay Area (11/20/2009 6:34:50 PM)
It figures
What a surprise that the principal figures involved in this situation refuse to make any comment.
As they try to stonewall and hide the issue, the furor will grow louder and louder; soon, Amador County will garner national attention for this--and add to an already sullied reputation.
"For they have sewn the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind" (Hos 8:7)
- The Watcher (11/20/2009 6:08:46 PM)
Jackson Reality
I am truly disgusted about his situation ! I, however am not shocked. I come from a small town up north and thought that the school had problems up there but I have to say Amador county is byfar the worst for "Small town politics" I have never seen so much hiding criminal activity from the people we put our utmost trust in. Shame on you and the children you are raising to HATE ! I agree those who turned their back should have jail time !!
- lily (11/20/2009 5:25:31 PM)
Oy Vey!
I'm sure if the statement on the locker had read "burn fa**gt burn" THEN there would have been an uproar and this would have been handled immediately.
- Lisa (11/20/2009 4:58:21 PM)
Walser & Glock Honesty - Class Action Suit
Because the above mentioned have notbeen honest with themselves, each other an the board... Mr. Glock clearly has not discussed the issues with anyone and has been riding his own horse while making decision on the pending issues.......
Some of the board members were pretty shocked at ALL that went on at the meeting Wed. they looked stunned, speechless, shocked...
Whose to Blame? Walser & Glock - Maybe the kid of Amador should file a class action suit against the two.......
Amador High Hate Crimes
All I know about this comes from the newspaper. I don't understand why the Board would avoid an investigation--I also don't get why no one took this young man seriously, or why they didn't remove the hateful carvings quickly. As an outsider, I always wonder if there isn't an 'unwritten' agenda that engaged locals know but others wouldn't. For example, was the inaction a way to punish this adolescent for complaining(or something else)? Are Jews really so 'hated' in Amador county(I never thought that they were)? Are the 'perps' of the damage related to Board members? Or is the Board uninformed, 'backwater', plain stupid? Guess we need to wait for the Feds to investigate to find out--what we all know is that this will cost the county big time, big money. A shame, when it could have been handled quickly and avoided.
Time to resign
Anyone in authority who knew about this situation and did not act should resign now before they cause more trouble for our students. If this goes to court, it could result in a fine for our district, doing further damage to our students. (I would prefer to see jail time for those whose negligence allowed this, as that would send a more effective message and not do further harm to our students).
I would like to encourage anyone who is thinking of running for school board to replace a member who has not taken this situation seriously to go for it.
This is a shameful situation and the outside world is going to take this situation as indicative of attitudes in Amador County. We don't need the bigots of the world to seek refuge in Amador county and we don't need to be an example of ongoing religious prejudice.
Message to Justin
Please continue the good work you are doing in advocating for your heritage and your rights.
You have always been such a good resonsible kid. Remember that what doesnt kill you only makes you stronger.....
You are doing the right thing Justin.... Dont listen to those who critize you.....
Keep fighting, you are on the top of that dirt hill, the hill that was created by the mounds of dirt that the district has pulled out of the hole they have dug themselves.....
Lyndsay is there with you in spirit, in support and in hope that the school will come up with a zero tolerance policy.....
