Folsom Public Library's help-with-homework program now delivers. In-home, online tutoring will happen this fall over the library Web site. "It's a great resource," said Stephanie Burton, youth-services librarian. "It will be one-on-one live tutoring, through chat rooms. It will have a whiteboard screen, where tutors can draw on-screen -- for example, geometric shapes can be used on-screen." Burton said the Brainfuse company will provide the online help service. It complements the Folsom library's personal homework-help staff, and the library's sizable bank of free-access computers. Brainfuse is the nation's leading provider of one-on-one tutoring offering online help in math, reading, and writing for students from third-grade to high-school senior levels. "You can submit written papers, and get feedback -- a critique," Burton said. Library user Dasaun Dicochea, 13, said he would think about using the service this fall. "In math, I need some help," he said. City Council members June 24 authorized accepting a $10,500 grant from the California State Librarian's Office, out of money authorized under the state Library Services and Technology Act. Notice of the competitive grant award came through in June. All in all, only some 40 public libraries around the state offer the grant-funded service. "After the school day ends, students sometimes find themselves without the support of an older student or adult who can help them to understand how to complete a homework assignment," wrote Katy Curl, library director in a report to council members. "Students who aren't able to come to the library (for personal help) may not have the same opportunities for assistance after school." All a student need do is log in, select a grade level and select an academic topic, Burton said. The Brainfuse program offers tutoring for students whose first language is Spanish. The grant would continue next fall to fund 75 percent of the tutoring service, to fund 50 percent the year after that and 25 percent the year after that. Curl reported to council members that the library would assess cost and benefit of paying to continue the tutoring service in later years by reallocating library budget money to the purpose.
