Dr. Ryan Thompson, a family practice doctor in Murphys, will present a free attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder workshop from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the HRC Amador Child Care Resources auditorium in Sutter Creek.
"It's going to be for anybody who encounters (or works with) a child or adult with ADHD," Thompson told the Ledger Dispatch Friday. Participants will "be able to see through the lens of a person with ADHD."
ADHD is a mental disorder characterized by a grossly excessive level of activity resulting in aggressive, disruptive behavior, according to A Dictionary of Nursing 2008; treatment can involve drugs and behavior therapy.
The techniques and strategies that Thompson will present will work with any child, said Brenda Burlington, program manager for HRC Amador Child Care Resources and workshop coordinator. "These things will help anyone dealing with children."
"He's coming here for nothing," she said, noting Thompson's willingness to take time out of his busy schedule to travel to Amador and give the workshop. "This is nice of him to do and it's a wonderful opportunity for our community."
Thompson has more than 20 years of experience evaluating and treating individuals, both children and adults, with ADHD, autism and related disorders, and is the founder of Mind Matters, a multidisciplinary center in Murphys that provides treatment and support for individuals and their families with ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, and learning disabilities.
