It has come to m attention that the new superintendent of our schools has asked the maintenance crew to put at the top of its list the painting of his office. This office was painted a few months ago because our previous superintendent wanted it to "look nice for the new guy." The new guy doesn't like the color. I happen to know that the new superintendent has put a freeze on expenditures, including the limited petty cash reimbursements available to teachers for classroom purchases they make out of their own pockets. My daughter's teachers are continually asking for donations of classroom supplies, from binder and copy paper and pencils, to eggs and baking soda for science experiments. The district can't afford to supply the basics for my daughter, whose classroom floor gets mopped twice a year because school maintenance is understaffed, but it can find the funds and maintenance crew time to re-paint the superintendent's office. This is shameful.
