The Jackson Rancheria has applied to the Jackson Planning Commission for a development amendment allowing the establishment of a drug and alcohol recovery center at 975 Broadway, the site of the former Emmanuel Baptist Church. Although this property was listed with arguably the most influential real estate broker in the county, it remained vacant for over two years before the Rancheria purchased it approximately three months ago.

The ordinary course of events when planning to purchase real property for a purpose requiring a planning zone amendment, variance or special use permit is to obtain the required approval before the purchase, not after. The only reasonable explanation for this deviation is the purchaser's apparent belief that the required approval was a mere formality.

The city has just notified the area property owners of the upcoming amendment application. However, the notice was very vague, describing the proposed facility as a "recovery center for people trying to achieve and maintain a life free from the use of drugs and alcohol." The operation of the proposed facility at this location can only result in countless problems.

The planning commission will hold a public hearing on this request Monday, March 17 at 6 p.m. at City Hall. A group of concerned residents will present a statement of opposition at that time. Interested parties are urged to attend.
