Just off from fighting the massive 9000 acre blaze in Santa Barbara, Cal Fire is fighting another firestorm, the $80 million in budget cuts. If voters fail to pass the budget ballot measures in Tuesday's special election, Cal Fire could lose 20 stations, 11 of its camps, and go without an additional 1100 firefighters. But even if voters say no to tax hikes, you could still end up paying more to keep Cal Fire running. In the Governor's 'May revised budget,' he has proposed a 4.8 percent property insurance fee that would cost all homeowners and business owners about $48 a year, and would bring in $48 million a year to help keep Cal Fire running. "We need firefighters if the fires break out, we need somebody to fight them so obviously we need to raise the taxes to get that done," says a local taxpayer. But not all taxpayers are that supportive. "I'm not gonna pay anymore than I'm already paying. I think we're paying enough," a taxpayer tells CBS13. Taxpayers have already seen their share of tax hikes this year. Sales tax has gone up one percent, income tax is up 25 percent, and the vehicle licensing fee is up 100 percent. If voters do approve those ballot measures next week, then the insurance fee would be lowered by 2.8 percent. And instead of using the funds for day to day operations, Cal Fire will use the money to add those 1100 firefighters and upgrade equipment. (© MMIX, CBS Broadcasting Inc.
