SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sixty seconds.

That's how much the Sacramento Fire Department estimates emergency response times will increase under a plan considered for the first time Tuesday by the City Council.

The fire department said its average response time will likely increase from 5 1/2 minutes to 6 1/2 minutes as about half of its fire stations close on a rotating basis. Each affected station would be closed once every 10 days.

The Council held its first budget hearing Tuesday at City Hall.

The city is facing an expected deficit of $58 million for the fiscal year starting July 1.

Under a proposal unveiled last week, the fire and police departments will cut their individual budgets by 8 percent. Other departments will have to make 20-percent reductions.

City administrators warn that even after the budget is adopted, they might have to make additional cuts later this summer if the state government decides to reduce funding to local governments.
