I enjoyed the April 1 commentary, "Tales to Astounda," although I don't agree with Editor Raheem Hosseini's reasoning for keeping the arrest log in publication - "it can spark story ideas." I am one who believes that the arrest log can act as a deterrent to other crimes and this notion would be enhanced if the Ledger would take the time to find out and print the punishments each offender received! I know that the Eureka Reporter in Humboldt County does this and instead of "throwing tomatoes" at the printed names, you seldom see their names reappear.
Thank goodness your paper dumped both the sheriff's call log - where names were never issued but got reports like "cow loose on Willow Creek Road" or "pranksters nail another mail box on Ram's Grade" - and the marriage/divorce list - talk about an invasion of privacy! Do keep the arrest log, but expand it by following up up on the punishments.
