Pipe bomb explodes in Arnold

A pipe bomb exploded in Arnold shortly after midnight Monday, damaging a school bus stop, according to a release from the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office.

An explosion was reported near Lilac Drive, off Highway 4 Arnold. When deputies arrived, they discovered that the school bus stop, at the corner of Highway 4 and Lilac Drive, had been damaged. Debris from the explosion was found in the street, along with parts of the pipe bomb that remained intact.

The CCSO Bomb Team and detectives were called out to conduct the investigation. Investigators described the pipe bomb as being 8 inches long and 3 inches in diameter.

Much of the bomb was found to be intact and investigators believe the device partially malfunctioned due to its construction.

Neighbors in the area heard the explosion but did not see any suspects, according to the report. One neighbor reported hearing a vehicle circling the area. The Sheriff s Office has not identified any suspects at this time.

Evidence found at the scene will be forwarded to the Department of Justice to be analyzed.
