                  Property Assessment Scam Hits The Mother Lode

                  Sonora, CA -- Mother Lode property owners are starting to 
                  receive a scam notice from Property Tax Reassessment (P.O. Box 
                  25519) in Los Angeles.
                  The company claims it will reassess your property for a fee of 
                  $179 so you can take advantage of lower taxes due to the 
                  downturn in the housing market. In addition if the service fee 
                  is not received by 2/26/09 you will be charged a $30 late fee.
                  From Tuolumne County Assessor-Recorder Ken Caetano, "The 
                  County Assessor's Office will do reviews of property values at 
                  no cost. Don't be misled ... it is not a solicitation from a 
                  governmental agency because we do not charge to do 
                  reassessments of property."
