Man arrested after standoff in Tuolumne |
Dean Nelson, 57, of Tuolumne, is in Tuolumne County Jail on $100,000 bail today after a five-hour standoff with law enforcement. He is charged with battery with serious bodily injury, shooting at an inhabited dwelling or vehicle, and resisting, delaying or obstructing a police officer. Deputies responded to a call from a Bay Avenue bar about 9:30 p.m. that a man had hit a woman. The woman and her 21-year-old son went home, about two blocks away on the 18700 block of Main Street, and called for help. The woman said Nelson beat her up and was outside with a gun. At least five other nearby residents called 911 about the same time, saying they heard shots, and at least five people were outside yelling and screaming. When deputies went to contact Nelson, he barricaded himself in a house a few doors away and threatened to kill the deputies, Sheriff's spokesman Paul Tualla said. "They set up a perimeter, and the Swat team was called," Tualla said. "They ended up with swat teams from both Tuolumne and Calaveras County. He gave up about 2:45 a.m., just as they were getting ready to storm the house." |
