The Girl Scouts' motto is "Be prepared." Yet the Girl Scouts weren't prepared for the extremely bad turn someone did to them by stealing their pickup truck on April 23 - tearing it apart before later abandoning it in Sheldon. The incident began at the makeshift commuter parking lot that sits off Highway 16 near the turn for Highway 124 - a large dirt parking area among the weeds. For two years, the Girl Scouts' regional Assistant Vice President, Bill Emmart of Ione, and the organization's Director of Properties, Mark Criswell of Sutter Creek, have met at this spot to carpool together to the Girl Scouts Heart of Central California main office in Rancho Cordova. Up until April 23, they had never had a problem: On that day, they left for work at 7 a.m. and, sometime before they returned at 6 p.m., the 1986 blue Toyota with a white camper was stolen. "There was no broken glass on the ground or any sign of what happened," Emmart said. "It was just gone." While Emmart and Criswell work in the interest of 29,000 Girl Scouts from 18 counties in the northern Central Valley, the truck's ties to Amador go beyond the fact that the two men are local and that the truck was stolen near Plymouth. "That truck was donated to the Girl Scouts in 2004 by Elizabeth Powers, a troop leader who lives in Sutter Creek," Emmart added. Throughout much of the year, the truck Powers gave is used to conduct maintenance on various Girl Scout properties. However, every summer the truck becomes particularly important when the Girl Scouts host their annual summer camp in Calaveras County at Camp Menzies. "We get 800 to 1,000 girls every year," Emmart said of the summer camp. "We really needed the truck returned because camp will be coming soon and it's crucial we have it." That wish was only half-granted on May 1, when a badly vandalized and tampered-with version of the Girl Scouts' truck was recovered in Sheldon, near Elk Grove. The vehicle had been stripped. Its dashboard had been broken apart when it was hot-wired. Its battery, radio and speakers were torn out. The lock on its door was pulled off. A tire was flat and the back window of its camper shell was shattered. Emmart does not think the extensive damage has rendered the truck unsalvageable. He's hoping to have it back on the road in time for the beginning of camp. Regardless of who was in possession of the truck between April 23 and May 1, Emmart says those who stole it know exactly who they took it from. "It's sad that they would steal from a non-profit," he observed. "We depend on donations to keep our organization going. If they had looked in the glove box, they would have known the truck was registered to the Girl Scouts. They would have had to have known who the truck belonged to." Emmart added that he felt the crime reflected a lack of conscience. Anyone with information regarding the crime should call the Jackson office of the California Highway Patrol at 223-4890.
