Officials from the California Highway Patrol, Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office and Tuolumne County District Attorney's Office this morning were investigating an officer-involved shooting at Rawhide Road and Highway 108 in Jamestown.

The incident occurred about 3 a.m. today, according to Sheriff's Office spokesman Dan Bressler.

About 2:30 a.m., a deputy patrolling Jamestown spotted a suspicious looking man behind the Willow Steakhouse and proceeded to investigate. The man fled on foot, losing the deputy.

Shortly thereafter, a robbery was reported at the Tesoro service station, formerly The Whistle Stop, at Rawhide and 108. Deputies and California Highway Patrol responded.

They chased a suspect into Woods Creek, where the man they were chasing pulled out a small handgun, Bressler said.

Bressler said one or more officers fired shots. The suspect, identified as Larry James Derossett, 40, of Willow Street, Jamestown, was hit two or more times, once in the leg and once in the abdomen-groin area, Bressler said.

Derossett was taken to Sonora Regional Medical Center where he was to undergo surgery this morning, Bressler said.

The gun was recovered, and no officers were hurt, Bressler said.
