The ruling, by Amador Superior Court Judge David Devore, was handed down July 9 and includes five years of probation and full restitution to a conference serving more than 2,500 kids in five counties. "What makes this particularly egregious is the abuse of trust," said District Attorney Todd Riebe. "The Mother Lode Youth Athletic Conference exists to benefit kids and for a person purportedly working towards that purpose to turn around and rip them off is, quite frankly, reprehensible." Barnett was president of the conference during the period he committed the crimes, which included making 11 checks out to cash for more than $8,200 and making 24 ATM withdrawals for $3,500. He also made nine debit card transactions worth more than $1,100, which came to light during a preliminary hearing in which Jackson police investigator Doug Grey testified about Barnett's actions. The thefts began within one week of Barnett opening a separate bank account for the conference. Barnett, president of the conference for the past six years and a board member for 16, opened an account that only required one signature for withdrawals. Bank statements were sent to his home address instead of the association's mailing address. Barnett originally revealed his crimes to Dan McHoul, current conference president, last April, after unpaid vendors began contacting other board members about unpaid bills. Barnett was arrested in November 2007. The conference consists of eight football teams with players and cheerleaders ranging in age from 8 to 14 from the counties of Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Tuolumne and a portion of San Joaquin.
